TAKE one spin bike, put it in the middle of a swimming pool, jump on and start pedalling like mad.
Now, that’s you taking part in the latest fitness craze sweeping the country.
Pippa Middleton is said to be a fan of Hydrospin and now two leisure centres in Renfrewshire are starting classes – the first in the west of Scotland.
Hydrospin is a spin class with a difference. The special bikes sit under the water, which provides more resistance when you are pedalling and also supports the joints giving a low-impact workout.
The upper body is also worked hard during a Hydrospin session as the arms are used to perform swimming-type movements through the water.
Renfrewshire Leisure – the management trust that runs sports and leisure facilities locally – have brought in 32 Hydrorider Aquabikes for pools at The Lagoon, in Paisley and The On-X, in Linwood.
For the past week, 20 leisure centre staff have been getting coached in how to instruct the Hydrospin classes, which start on June 9.
Renfrewshire Leisure chief executive, Joyce McKellar, said: “This is a fantastic new take on spin classes combining the dynamism of indoor studio cycling with the benefits of water-based exercise.
“We’re the first in the West of Scotland to offer these Hydrospin classes and I’ve no doubt they’ll be a big hit.”
The classes are also suitable for the over-50s, GP referrals and people recovering from sports-related injuries.
Joyce added: “The Hydrospin classes enable you to improve overall well-being as well as aiding weight loss, increasing full body strength and endurance and improve cardiovascular fitness.
“The cooling effect of water also reduces the discomfort of sweating and the buoyancy of the water gives support around the joints, which makes Hydrospin a fantastic low risk, highly-intensive exercise.
“It can be enjoyed and accessed by everyone, no matter what fitness level.”
