ONE of Scotland’s brightest young companies has received two top accolades from the world of publishing.
In recognition of their groundbreaking digital developments, as well as their ambitious school book programme, Bright Red Publishing have garnered plaudits from across the industry.
At the prestigious Bookseller Industry Awards in London, the Edinburgh-based firm was named in the Highly Commended category.
The team were congratulated by the judges for its digital innovation in the Scottish education market and applauded for bringing consistently high standards of publishing, particularly its new National 5 Study Guides.
“Bright Red knows its market inside out, and it shows in its results,” the judges said.
Bright Red Publishing will also be the inaugural recipient of the Stationers’ Company Innovation Excellence Award, which highlights the very best technological innovations and recognises excellence in the world of business.
John MacPherson, director at Bright Red Publishing, said:
“We are totally ‘over the moon’ to receive this kind of recognition at a UK level. Our books and digital resources for Scottish students are in a league of their own and these awards, alongside the sheer number of pupils and teachers that are signing up to our online Digital Zone, shows that we are absolutely doing something right!
“The new Curriculum for Excellence presents many fantastic opportunities and we have enjoyed working with top subject experts and Edinburgh Napier University on our new products for Scottish schools.
“We’ll be adding more subjects and resources in coming months to keep up with the pace of curricular change and ensure that our content is fresh and relevant for every Scottish student.”
Working alongside experts from Edinburgh Napier University, Bright Red Publishing has rolled out a suite of Study Guides and online resources for students to help them pass the new National 5 exams.
Nearly 8,000 registrations have been logged on the site since launch last autumn and more than 30,000 tests have been taken on the Bright Red Digital Zone website. With the exams underway, 500 tests are being taken each and every day.
Professor Bill Buchanan, from Edinburgh Napier University’s Institute for Informatics and Digital Innovation, said:
“For us, this has been a once in a lifetime opportunity to apply some of our research work to support Bright Red Publishing’s vision and to offer considerable help with the radical change in education in Scotland.
“The collaborative project has provided an excellent opportunity to support our next generation in Scotland with web-based materials which not only support, but engage and encourage deep learning.
“Some of the web-based content around Maths, for example, which is one of the most challenging areas for pupils, shows how to derive answers with full working out, from any type of problem posed. In French, full language and speech translators are completely cutting edge.
“With this support we add to the vibrancy of Bright Red’s books, along with providing us both with a platform to considerably improve education standards in Scotland, for all the major subject areas.
“A key mission for the partnership is to focus on the academic material, and not on the technologies used. For this we think we have something that will scale to future demand and provide the vital online support they need.”
