COOK Gill, co-founder of rapidly expanding restaurant chain, Cook & Indi’s World Buffet, has been crowned Curry King of the Year at The Scottish Curry Awards 2014 at a glitzy awards dinner attended by over 500 industry representatives and curry lovers from all over the country.
Begins a spokesperson: “Established in 2008 to recognise and reward the curry industry in all its facets, The Scottish Curry Awards are dedicated to showcasing Scotland’s love for curry through rewarding the best in the industry.
“The Curry King 2014 award ‘hails the dawn of an individual who has engrossed themselves in the curry industry and successfully emerged at the forefront of the sector’. Cook Gill certainly fits the bill.
“A veteran of the restaurant trade for over quarter of a century, most of his career has been with Harlequin Leisure Group, which his brother (Charan Gill MBE) created and developed into Europe’s largest Indian restaurant chain before selling it in 2005.
“Cook, who started is culinary career as a chef (hence his name) prior to venturing front of house, remained with Harlequin until 2011, by which point he was operating five of the group’s franchised restaurants.
“Competitors for nearly a decade, Cook Gill and Indi Singh joined forces two years ago to introduce the concept of World Buffet to Scotland. Starting from humble beginnings in an empty shell in Hamilton, the pair proceeded to open six restaurants, with the same number of openings planned over the next two years as the West of Scotland develops a taste for its ‘world on a plate’ concept.”
Commenting on his award win, Gill said: “I’m delighted to win this award – which provides further proof that the West of Scotland is rapidly developing a taste for our pioneering ‘world on a plate’ offering!
“I’d like to dedicate this award to our many hard-working staff who strive every day to ensure that all our customers enjoy a delicious dining experience.”
Cook’s coronation as Curry King 2014 follows COOK and Indi’s World Buffet, being named Business of the Year in the Scottish Minority Ethnic Achievement Awards 2013.
With a variety of dishes ranging from pizza to pastas, starters to salads, sushi to noodles and pakoras to curries, Cook & Indi’s World Buffet offers seven different cuisines (Indian, Japanese, Sushi, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Mexican) and over 100 dishes.
And its fixed-price system, which starts from just £5.99, means that diners can eat as much as they want – whether double or triple helpings – which appeals to everyone, children and pensioner alike.
