AN annual awards competition celebrating Scotland’s best media coverage of refugee and asylum issues is calling for entries.
The Refugee Week Scotland Media Awards is staged by the British Red Cross, Scottish Refugee Council and the National Union of Journalists. It is open to all journalists working for media outlets in Scotland.
The aim of the awards is to encourage and recognise fair, accurate and balanced coverage of asylum seeker and refugee issues in Scotland.
The awards are split into six categories: Print (national, news), Print (national, features), Print (local), Digital Media, Broadcast Media and Photography. There is also a Special Award sponsored by the NUJ, which will be announced on the night of the awards ceremony.
This year, the awards ceremony will be held on World Refugee Day (Friday 20 June) at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow’s Merchant City.
It will be one of the highlights of Refugee Week Scotland – a festival of events, co-ordinated by Scottish Refugee Council, celebrating the contribution of refugees to the UK.
Entries for print categories can be in pdf. or Word document format, photography as a jpg and should be emailed to DMasterton@redcross.org.uk. Broadcast entries can be emailed to the same address as MP3 files or sent by post on DVD to Derek Masterton, senior media relations officer, British Red Cross, 4 Nasmyth Place, Hillington, Glasgow G52 4PR.
All entries will be judged by a panel including leading industry figures, refugee journalists, photographers and broadcasters
The closing deadline for entries is Wednesday, 7 May 2014.
