CYCLETTA, the UK’s leading women-only cycle series, has announced it is to return to Scotland in October 2014 and have welcomed Macmillan Cancer Support as title partner of the series which will now be known as Macmillan Cycletta.

The women-only cycling event will return to Scone Palace on Sunday 5th October 2014 for its second year after attracting more than 600 female cyclists to its launch last year.

Begins a spokesperson: “The series is currently gearing up for its first event in 2014 following its most successful year ever in 2013 with almost 4,000 women getting on their bikes across the country.

“The events have seen growth of more than 130 per cent since their inception just three years ago, which is reflective of the surge in popularity of women’s cycling.”

Olympic champion, Victoria Pendleton who will continue as an ambassador for the series, said:

“It has been such a pleasure to be involved with Macmillan Cycletta so far. I’m proud to have been a part of it since the very beginning and am delighted to see more and more women continue to take up cycling.”

Macmillan Cycletta 2014 caters for cyclists of all ages and abilities, and will feature Novice, Classic and Challenge distances as well as the new Macmillan Cycletta 100km distances.

The new, longer route has been created due to demand from the Macmillan Cycletta audience for a longer women-only cycle route.

This reflects a recent explosion in the popularity of women’s cycling and the new 100km distance which will be available at Macmillan Cycletta Scotland to be held at the historic Scone Palace in Perthshire on Sunday 5th October.

All Macmillan Cycletta routes will wind through sensational surroundings on quiet, safe and well-managed roads.

The Novice distance will be a manageable 20km route which is perfect for beginners and is a similar challenge to running 5km.

The Classic route which is 40km is perfect for anyone with a little more confidence on their bike.

Finally, the Challenge distance is aimed at somewhat more experienced riders, who are seeking a slightly sterner test or for those in training for longer sportives, as the distance ranges from 60-70km.

Macmillan Cycletta is open to girls as young as 12-16 years-old when accompanied by an adult.

The year’s series will start at the prestigious Wiggle Dragon Ride on 8June, in South Wales.

Each event will feature all the unique touches that made the 2013 events so popular such as regular and well stocked treat stops along the route, fantastic goodie-bags, friendly and knowledgeable marshals and buzzing event villages.

The Macmillan Cycletta Spa by Unlisted will also be providing a complimentary spa experience for all entrants after the events. This provides the perfect opportunity for ladies to relax, refresh and rejuvenate after a day on the bike.

At Macmillan Cycletta events the younger kids will also be able to get involved and get active at the Scootathlon which takes place on event day, at each of the venues.

The Scootathlon is a mini, fun triathlon for children between the ages of four and eight where they scoot (150m), bike (600m) and run (200m). Girls and boys will race together in various age categories, completing the three disciplines.

Cycling programme manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, Liz Hemming, said:

“Macmillan Cycletta is really exciting for us as the series continues to grow in 2014 and we look forward to seeing more women at the events. Macmillan Cycletta is a great way for female cyclists nationwide to raise money to help people affected by cancer through taking on a cycling challenge.

“The new title of Macmillan Cycletta reflects our commitment to encouraging more women to get on their bikes, and use their challenge to help others.”

Entries have now opened for the event, and with recent Scottish sportives selling out in just a matter of hours, organisers are urging participants to sign up soon to secure their place at this year’s event.

Participants can register at www.humanrace.co.uk/cycletta and can also keep up-to-date at the Macmillan Cycletta Twitter feed and Facebook pages.

Macmillan Cycletta is part of the Human Race WomenOnly series which includes triathlon, swimming, running and cycling events.
