Media Release: Local recycling company offers businesses some food for thought

AS many businesses prepare to wind down for the festive season, a North-east organics recycling company is warning local companies to be prepared for new legislation coming into force in Scotland in under two weeks.

Keenan Recycling, based in New Deer, is urging business owners to comply with The Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which start on 1 January 2014.

Says a spokesperson: “From this date, businesses of all sizes producing more than 50kg of food waste per week will be required to separate it from landfill or they could face a fine.

“Companies involved in the processing, distribution, preparation or sale of food will also have to recycle their food waste. By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.”

Keenan Recycling, which transforms food and garden waste into compost for farming and horticultural use, launched its commercial food waste collection scheme in 2010.

The company was the first business in Scotland offering organisations the opportunity to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels.

In preparation for the new guidelines, the specialist recycling firm, which currently works with more than 600 businesses across the North-east and Inverness, has increased its fleet of lorries to five, which will allow them to collect just over 2,000 tonnes of waste per year.

The Bay Fish and Chips of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, is committed to managing its waste effectively and has been recycling its food waste since 2012.

Owner of The Bay, Calum Richardson, said: “I would definitely encourage business owners to recycle their waste. Over a 12-month period we managed to prevent 6,300kg of waste from going to landfill and also saved 56 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the environment.”

Keenan Recycling managing director, Grant Keenan, said: “A number of organisations are likely to be affected by the regulations. Hotels, restaurants, shopping centre food courts, canteens, shops that serve food, supermarkets, nursing homes and hospitals will all have to comply, so business owners need to act quickly to ensure they comply with the new rules.”
