EDINBURGH-based Mary’s Milk Bar is tucked away in the Grassmarket and owner, Mary Hillard, recently teamed up with Scottish charity, Health in Mind, to host four special evenings for people to raise funds, whilst learning about and enjoying the art of gelato.
Health in Mind community fundraiser, Katherine Sellar, returned to the glamorous deco-style parlour to present Mary with a certificate to thank her for arranging the fundraising events and to receive the £200 which was raised.
Katherine commented: “The evenings were hugely popular and as well as hearing about the history of ice cream, we were given a sneaky peak of Mary’s laboratory where she makes the gelato and we learned the science behind it.
“Interestingly, we also heard how, in days of old, gelato was considered to be good for mental health and was given to people in hospital to cheer them up.
“However, the best part of each evening was the opportunity to taste the three types of wonderful gelato – milk, egg and water-based.”
Mary trained in Bologna in Italy at the prestigious Carpigiani Gelato University which means she is a gelato graduate! She has also worked as a chocolatier for the last five years.
Speaking about the success of the evenings, Mary said: “I believe that I may have the best job in the world as I am passionate about producing artisan gelato as it is a world away from industrial ice cream.
“I see how something that tastes good can make people happy and I am delighted to have been able to help raise funds for Heath in Mind and give everyone a lovely evening too.”
Mary’s gelato is soft and creamy and every week, there are new flavours and new ways to enjoy them.
Katherine concluded: “The evenings were a great success and I know many people would love to revisit the world of fresh gelato and savour Mary’s latest concoctions.”
