FOR businesses to operate efficiently, various resources including materials, energy and food are needed to support work processes and staff, which can create substantial amounts of waste.
With only four months left until the new zero waste regulations come into force on 1 January 2014, business owners are being encouraged to prepare for the new legislation.
Says a spokesperson: “From this date, all companies producing more than 50kg of food waste per week will be required to separate this from landfill waste or risk a fine. By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.”
In preparation for the new guidelines, leading North-east organics recycling company, Keenan Recycling, which is based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, has been awarded £100,000 by the Scottish Government, towards two new specialist food waste lorries.
The recycling firm launched a commercial food waste collection scheme in 2010, becoming the first business in Scotland offering organisations the opportunity to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels, turning waste into British Standard Industry accredited compost for farming and horticultural use.
Keenan Recycling currently works with more than 500 businesses across the North-east and Inverness to help them to divert food waste away from landfill, and each new lorry will enable the company to collect an additional 2,000 tonnes of waste per year.
Managing director, Grant Keenan, said as the Scottish Government continues to encourage a move away from reliance on landfill towards more sustainable methods of waste treatment, having a comprehensive waste management system can reduce direct taxes for a business.
Grant Keenan said: “As disposing of waste through landfill sites becomes an increasingly expensive option, more companies are choosing to recycle, which can also help them work towards their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) targets.”
Technical director of Keenan Recycling, Gregor Keenan, added: “The two new food waste lorries at Keenan Recycling will take the fleet to five in total, and we have also ordered another lorry which is due to arrive in early December.
“Each lorry will allow us to collect just over 2,000 tonnes of waste per year, which will enable us to meet demand from our customers.”
Organic recycling firm, Keenan Recycling currently processes in excess of 50,000 tonnes of organic waste per year at the award winning £5m facility, collecting food waste from as far South as Stonehaven to Tain in the North.
The waste is then used to create British Standard Industry accredited compost for farming and horticultural use.
