ABERDEEN’S premier ice hockey team is gearing up for the new season ahead with the appointment of a new head coach.

The Aberdeen Lynx ice hockey team, which competes in the Scottish National League, has signed up former Dundee Tigers coach, Rod Ramsay, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club.

Mr Ramsay, originally from Prince George, Canada, has an extensive background and training in the sport.

He previously coached all age levels in Western Canada, and more recently coached the Lynx’s opponents in Dundee, successfully leading them to the Scottish play off championships.

Newly appointed Lynx head coach, Rod Ramsay, said: “I’m really looking forward to my season at the Lynx. I see huge potential in the team and I truly believe that with a little hard work, the club can make it to the top.

“I believe in a high tempo, hard working and aggressive style of hockey, and I plan to use my knowledge and hockey philosophy to develop the team into a winning one.

“We are going train like pros for the next month so we are in better shape and fully prepared to the hit ice in our first home game in September.”

The Lynx, which plays in front of thousands of fans at the Aberdeen Linx Ice Arena on the Beach Promenade, is currently preparing for the team’s first home game of the season on Saturday 7 September against the Dundee Comets, and forthcoming season, with rigorous training sessions twice-a-week.

Vice-chair of the Lynx, John Colley, said: “It is great to have Rod on board as our new coach as he has lots of experience that will help to move the team forward this season.

“We started last season well but we had a few problems and injuries mid season, which meant we finished seventh in the league.

“The team is enjoying Rod’s style of coaching and we are already seeing improvements in our techniques and fitness levels.

“We have fantastic supporters who come along each week so we plan to put on a strong performance in our first game and give them a season to remember.”

The Aberdeen Lynx also has junior and senior teams and encourage new players of all ages to get in touch if they are keen to start a new sport.
