SHETLAND’S newest hotel, The Moorfield Hotel, has opened its doors for the first time.
Located in the village of Brae, the 100-bedroom hotel has been completed in just under a year and will create 43 jobs in the local area.
The property, which is owned by BDL Shetland, will be used primarily to accommodate workers at TOTAL’s new gas plant at Sullom Voe.
An occupancy level of 100 per cent will be guaranteed for the first year of operation, with a minimum of 80 per cent occupancy in future years.
There is still plenty for local residents to enjoy, with a restaurant serving teas, coffees, freshly prepared meals and a newly created ‘Shetland Afternoon Tea’. The hotel also contains a fully-equipped gym and two conferencing suites.
Stuart McCaffer, chair of BDL Shetland, said: “We are thrilled to be opening the doors of The Moorfield Hotel for the very first time.
“The hotel is an exciting development for Brae and the wider Shetland Islands, and will make a substantial contribution to the local community.
“I’d like to thank the people of Brae, as well as the wider population, for their support and we look forward to welcoming them to the hotel.”
The Moorfield Hotel has placed itself firmly at the heart of island life, with the public areas featuring the work of local photographers and 95 per cent of the hotel’s suppliers coming from Shetland.
Ailsa Sangster, general manager of the hotel, said: “Although TOTAL will be our main customers the facilities are open to local residents, including our restaurant, bar and gym.
“We envisage the hotel becoming a key part of the community and we look forward to welcoming the people of Shetland through our doors.”
The construction of The Moorfield Hotel was made possible through a £6.5m funding package from Royal Bank of Scotland Corporate and Institutional Banking (RBS CIB).
Lesley Stark, director – client coverage, Glasgow, RBS CIB, said: “It’s wonderful to see this much needed property come to life in such a stunning location.
“I have no doubt that it will become a key part of the Shetlands’ business and leisure infrastructure.
“The hotel is a great example of the sort of project that RBS is delighted to be involved in and we look forward to further strengthening our long-standing relationship with Redefine BDL Hotels.”
