FOLLOWING the successful completion of the first phase of Home Scotland’s £multi-million regeneration project at Mill O’Mains in Dundee, ISG has been instructed to undertake the second phase of the development, which represents a further investment of £8.5 million by the Scottish social housing provider – part of Home Group.
The regeneration project, which is being carried out by Dundee City Council and Home Scotland, focuses on two separate brownfield sites on the Mill O’Mains estate.
The Phase 2 works start on Monday (Aug 5) and will result in the construction of 70 new homes across the two sites, comprising a mix of detached, semi-detached, terraced housing and flats in the development’s Mull Terrace, Lewis Terrace, Colonsay Terrace and Lismore Terrace.
Each of the new properties will be built to a ‘Very Good’ EcoHomes standard, incorporating solar panels and a passive ventilation system to minimise their overall impact on the environment and reduce energy costs for residents.
In addition, ISG will carry out extensive external works as part of the project, creating new roads and pavements, gardens and external landscaping, in the area surrounding the homes, which will be available for social rent and mid market rent.
In May 2012, ISG handed over the first 65 homes at Mill O’Mains.
The successful completion of this first phase of the Mill O’Mains redevelopment earned ISG a Silver award at the National Considerate Constructors Awards and, together with Home Scotland, ISG was shortlisted in the Community Partnership of the Year category of the Scottish Home Awards.
ISG’s Northern regional managing director, Andy Mallice, commented: “Successfully delivering the first phase of a project which had such an immediate and beneficial impact on the local community was incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.
“We welcome the opportunity to further develop our partnership with Home Scotland, as the provider continues to make a significant investment in creating an additional 70 homes, which are designed to be highly sustainable and cost-effective to run for residents.”
Having built up excellent community ties during the initial phase, ISG will once again use the same award winning construction team to deliver phase two at Mill O’Mains.
As part of its nationwide commitment, the contractor will also continue to, wherever possible, utilise the skills and expertise of the local supply chain to ensure investment stays within the regional economy.
David Zwirlein, Home Scotland development manager, said: “We’re very excited that the next phase of regenerating this area ofDundeewill soon get underway.
“Our customers who have moved into homes which were completed during phase one have said they really enjoy living in their modern and energy efficient properties.
“We worked with ISG on phase one and we were impressed with their quality of work and their membership of the Considerate Constructor scheme which is important to our customers who will be living nearby while work is carried out.”
The regeneration is being partly financed by Dundee City Council and the Scottish Government.
John Alexander, convener of Dundee City Council’s housing committee, said: “The regeneration of Mill o’Mains has been integral to creating a vibrant and popular community for residents.
“The area has been transformed and now contains housing that is fit for the ambitions of residents and fit for the 21st century.
“The quality of the houses that have been built meet the highest standards and have given tenants energy efficient and secure homes that they can be proud of.”
