RESEARCH recently published by comparison site, uSwitch.com, has revealed that “Brits could face a £256 million bill this summer for failing to know which countries are in the EU”.
The news has prompted Firstnumber – who provide cheap international calls to over 500 countries around the world, from anywhere in the UK – to comment.
It believes that, though the continued caps being introduced on EU roaming is helping to dramatically reduce the number of people experiencing bill shock on their return home, there remains a large number of Brits unsure if their destination is part of the EU or not, and the risk of bill shock still is a threat for those setting off for their summer holiday.
The research provides further insight by highlighting that almost half of all participants, 48 per cent, thought Croatia was part of the EU. It continues, as many others also believed Switzerland, Iceland and Norway were part of the EU.

“It’s clear that this is a common mistake being made by many Brits, nonetheless, we believe it’s vital to not only spread the word but also highlight that being smart and planning ahead can help reduce the costs involved whenever travelling to a new country. Setting limits and understanding the charges for the destination country should be a priority before leaving.
“For example, Utilising local Wi-Fi spots to contact those back home is just a single step to help reduce costs. Whilst keeping data roaming switched off whenever it is not required.”
The research also identified that two thirds of Brits, 66 per cent, are set to travel within the EU this year. With three in ten, 29 per cent, still vulnerable to bill shock.
