SINCE Aussies, Neil and Annie Whittle, took over the ownership of The Monarch at the end of 2012, there has been a great deal of excitement and numerous changes.
Under the previous ownership, Monadhliath Hotel, as it was known, was a very different style. It was also famed for being the popular drinking hole during The Monarch of the Glen TV series.
Neil and Annie have injected a huge amount of energy into the hotel and grounds, creating a particularly attractive destination.
Opening the hotel in December 2012, just a month after taking over as owners was perhaps a brave move.
However, the dynamic duo has survived the winter and generated a great deal of interest in the hotel, predominantly by word of mouth.
In February 2013, the name was changed to a far more pronounceable and memorable name without losing its heritage or identity.
Neil and Annie are passionate about food and naturally The Monarch is fast establishing itself as food destination. Focussing on locally-sourced produce the food is essentially Scottish with some interesting twists inspired by the couple’s international experience.
“We certainly had our work cut out for us when we took over the hotel,” explains Neil Whittle.
“However, it has been an exciting journey and we’ve not stopped yet. We have been particularly encouraged by the response of our guests and are forever grateful to our fantastic and hard working team.”
Not surprisingly, the hotel picked up a Rising Star Commendation, Hospitality Gold Medal and Local and Seasonal Good Food Laurel at the Scottish Hotel Awards recently.
