A LEADING North-east recycling firm has secured a deal with a Scottish supermarket chain to dispose of its waste.
Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer, Aberdeenshire, which transforms food and garden waste into compost, uses specialist food waste depackaging equipment to handle unwanted goods from 23 Scotmid branches situated from Aberdeen to Inverness.
The machinery disposes of both packed and unpacked foods, and can also process cans and tins of soup.
The move will help the chain meet targets set out in The Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which requires all businesses producing more than 50kg of food waste per week to separate this from landfill waste by January 2014.
By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.
Managing director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, said: “When packaged food expires or is otherwise unfit for sale or consumption, disposal can become a costly burden for the manufacturer or retailer. Recycling of packed and unpacked foods also leads to lower transportation costs.”
Organic recycling firm, Keenan Recycling, also operates in Inverness and the surrounding areas and currently processes in excess of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year at the award-winning £5m facility, collecting food waste from more than 500 businesses across the region.
