MICHELLE Halligan, tax assistant manager at leading mid-tier accountancy firm French Duncan, has been named Young Accountant of the Year at this year’s Scottish Accountancy Awards.
Having started her career as a trainee handling personal tax and VAT before specialising in corporate tax, Halligan’s recent training and work experience in VAT and other indirect taxes mean that she now offers clients advice in all these areas.
Earlier this year, Halligan qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor, the highest level of tax qualification available in the UK. Unusually, she chose to study the VAT and Other Indirect Taxes route, on her own initiative.
Says a spokesperson: “There were no courses available in Scotland to do this route of study so she had to do it all herself through home study. Halligan was the only person in Scotland who sat the indirect taxes application paper in the November 2012 sitting.
“She has a VAT diploma and has a keen interest in that area of tax. ATT qualified, she also has an LLB from Glasgow University.”
Halligan said: “I’m delighted to win this award and would like to thank the tax team and all my colleagues at French Duncan for their continued assistance and support.
“As Tax Assistant Manager, my responsibilities involve corporate tax compliance and advisory services, and include management of a varied portfolio of clients from small and medium sized companies to a large PLC group.
“I particularly enjoy the fact that each company is different, with its own issues and peculiarities, and look forward to working alongside my colleagues to provide our clients with a comprehensive business advisory service.”
