TWO successful North-east businessmen who sold their previous business to a Boston firm for an eight-figure sum are behind a rapidly growing engineering firm which was launched last year.
Inverurie-based start-up engineering firm, Advantec Aberdeen Ltd, which was established in May 2012 by directors, Steve King, Andy Fisher and Robin Jones, has reported a first year turnover of more than £2.3million, surpassing initial projections.
Steve King and Andy Fisher previously owned engineering firm, Hydrafit Subsea Ltd, before successfully selling it to a Boston firm in 2008.
They are now at the helm of Advantec, along with Robin Jones and Mark Anderson, and the company operates in the subsea engineering sector in both subsea controls and test and assembly of high criticality equipment.
Operating from the previous International Paper Mill in the Kirkwood Commercial Park, Inverurie, Advantec has grown from three to 45 members of staff in the first year of trading.
Around 35 members of the team previously worked with Hydrafit Subsea.
The firm’s success is in-part due to securing lucrative five-year contracts with five major oil companies, and the hard work of the team that they have recruited over the last 12 months has also played a major role.
Advantec’s growth has been recognised in the prestigious Grampian Awards for Business Excellence 2013 as the firm has been named as one of three finalists in the Business Success Under Three Years category.

“We have been very lucky to have attracted a great pool of talent and retained 99 per cent of our staff in the past year. Winning this award would be great way to thank the team for their dedication and hard work.”
The awards which are organised by Enterprise North East Trust (Enterprise) and sponsored by RBS – Ahead for Business, alongside Business Gateway, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, culminates with an awards ceremony on Thursday 27 of June 2013 at the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel.
