Discover the powerful marks left in France by Vauban, Leonardo Da Vinci, Victor Hugo and Le Corbusier
FRANCE has seen some history’s greatest minds walk across it, leaving their marks through their lives. With summer almost here, now’s the time to discover these genius’ works as they intended.
Vauban: Military genius and advisor to Louis XIV, his Besançon Citadel (Franche-Comté), Verrou de l’Estuaire (Aquitaine) and Mont Dauphin (PACA) are three of his 12 UNESCO World Heritage listed sites. All of the sites on which he has worked bear similar architectural style, distinguishing themselves from other buildings of their time.
Leonardo Da Vinci: Master of all trades and artistic realms, Leonardo’s final years were spent in Amboise at the Clos Lucé Chateau. Today, most of his works have been transferred to the Louvre Museum in Paris although you can also visit the Royal Chateau of Amboise where kind Francis I resided and where Leonardo was eventually buried.
Victor Hugo: With works including ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, Hugo has established himself as a literary icon. His house in Besançon (Franche-Comté) will be opened in June 2013 full of memorabilia as well as his apartment at the Rohan Guéménée Hotel in Paris. You can also visit the Panthéon (Paris) where he was buried.
Le Corbusier: The essence of modern architecture can found in Le Corbusier’s work, starting with the Villa Savoye in Poissy. One of his most influential works is actually in Marseille at the Cité Radieuse, the design of which surely inspired the Maison Radieuse in Rezé near Nantes. His Cabanon in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is also a must-see.
