STAFF retention can be a constant struggle for many employers in today’s job market.
Whether it’s for career progression or a higher salary, it has become increasingly common for people to switch jobs quickly and more regularly.
Contrary to this trend, senior accountant, Mary Brebner, has worked with north-east accountancy firm SBP Accountants and Business Advisors, for an impressive 29 years, making her the company’s longest serving member of staff.
She started work with SBP in 1984 as an accounts assistant, and at that time the company was known as George Shearer Accounts, which was based in a small office on Narrow Lane in Peterhead.
Today, SBP is based in larger premises in Links Terrace in the town, and also has offices in Fraserburgh, Banff and Aberdeen.
A common reason for switching jobs is to eliminate the cost and hassle of commuting, but Mary is lucky enough to live a five-minute drive from the office, meaning that she can make the most her free time and enjoy a great work-life balance.
During her time working in the accountancy industry, Mary has seen a lot of changes. In her early career she worked entirely with handwritten files and has constantly had to adapt her skills to keep up with the technological changes.
She now uses the most up-to-date accountancy software to cater for her clients quickly and efficiently.
Mary said: “I think the main reason that I have stayed put for so long is that I work with a great team of individuals and I have great relationships with my clients.
“When you have such a long history with a client it is more like talking to a friend than dealing with a business contact.
“We are a very hard working team and I am confident that we provide a great service to our customers. I find that working hard keeps my clients happy, which in return makes my job easier.”
