RSNO and SCO embark on third year of joint Aberdeen Concert Series
SINGLE tickets go on sale today (Wednesday 8 May) for the 2013:14 Aberdeen Concert Series, a continuing partnership between the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) which enters its third year.
For the coming Season, the two orchestras will present a versatile programme, from 17th century masterworks to modern concertos, and will see some of the best-loved soloists and conductors perform at the city’s Music Hall.
In April 2013, Aberdeen Performing Arts announced it was considering plans for refurbishing the historic venue.
The two orchestras first engaged in partnership in the north-east as a way of providing greater value and choice for their audiences. Subscribers to the Aberdeen Concert Series benefit from increased savings and can select their subscription concerts across the two national ensembles’ concerts.
The SCO opens the Aberdeen Concert Series with SCO associate artist, Alexander Janiczek, directing one of Mozart’s greatest symphonies: No38 Prague.
To celebrate the SCO’s 40th anniversary season SCO principal conductor, Robin Ticciati, makes two visits to the Music Hall: firstly he explores Schumann’s Symphonies No1 and No4 in November and in March is joined by the legendary Steven Isserlis playing Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.
Mozart concertos feature throughout this Series with Piano Concertos No 23 and No 25 performed by Llŷr Williams and Paul Lewis, respectively.
The award-winning harpist, Sivan Magen, joins SCO Conductor Emeritus, Joseph Swensen, for the Concerto for Flute and Harp and Nicola Benedetti brings the SCO year in Aberdeen to a close with the Violin Concerto No 5 Turkish.
Highlights for the forthcoming Series from the RSNO, which performs four concerts next Season, include performances of Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony (sponsored by Capital Document Solutions) and Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto with soloist, Guy Johnston; the ever-popular RSNO Christmas Concert featuring The Snowman (sponsored by ScotRail); legendary British pianist, John Lill, celebrating his 70th birthday, performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No1; and RSNO music director, Peter Oundjian, conducting Beethoven’s Symphony No7, alongside violin concertos by Haydn and Thomas Adès, with Italian violinist, Augustin Hadelich.
