AN independent green accreditation programme is looking to recruit a new member of the team which has helped spread the word – from Aberdeen to Auckland and Ventnor to Vancouver.
Green Tourism was launched 16 years ago and is now considered the biggest of its kind in the world, having helped nearly 10,000 businesses improve their commitment to sustainability.
Says a spokesperson: “It is considered one of the most rigorous of its kind and is the only certification programme independently validated by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) on behalf of VisitEngland, VisitWales and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, and endorsed by VisitScotland and Failte Ireland.
“The organisation has become a world leader in highlighting the importance of protecting environments, respecting local cultures, supporting communities, conserving natural resources and minimising pollution.
“The programme criteria, developed by Andrea Nicholas and her partner Jon Proctor, has now been adopted across the UK and as far afield as Canada, Eire, Sweden and New Zealand as the benchmark for sustainable tourism practices.
“Members are evaluated on a range of 145 best practice measures, including use of energy efficient heating and lighting, nature conservation and community involvement, to achieve a bronze, silver or gold award.”
The organisation is now looking to recruit a new full-time assessor reporting to its headquarters in Perth, Scotland doing assessments throughout the UK and possibly Ireland and Europe.
Potential candidates with a personal commitment to the environment and good communication skills are expected to have an appropriate qualification or experience of auditing against recognised standards. Other responsibilities require working within the technical team as well as contributing to scheme and criteria development.
Andrea Nicholas, director of Green Tourism, said: “This is an ideal position for someone who is passionate about sustainable tourism with the knowledge to back it up.
“We already enjoy an unrivaled international reputation with experience of working in New Zealand, Canada and Sweden. There is growing interest from the UK and overseas in the Green Tourism programme and we need dedicated and committed technical personnel to help us with this expansion.
“Key to the role is undertaking site assessments efficiently, providing appropriate and helpful advice to businesses, identifying significant environmental aspects and making recommendations on measures to reduce environmental impact and highlight improvements and opportunities.”
Although the company is based in Perth, there is some flexibility in where assessors are located provided they can work from the head office when required.
The company is offering a competitive salary, depending on experience, and the dealing for applications is May 31, 2013.
