MASTER chef and artist, Domenico Crolla, proprietor of Bella Napoli in Shawlands on the southside of Glasgow, made a pizza art history in Parma last week when he presented Emanuele Filiberto, Prince of Venice and Piedmont, with his latest art work – a portrait of Italian romantic composer Giuseppe Verdi on a pizza topping.
The occasion was the World Pizza Championship, which this year marked the 200th anniversary of Parma’s most famous son, Giuseppe Verdi.
Domenico represented the UK as a judge in the country’s biggest and most prestigious pizza making contest.
He said: “It was a great honour to be able to present Emanuele Filiberto, the only male-line grandson of Umberto II, the last King of Italy, with the latest example of my pioneering pizza art – particularly as his great great grandmother was none other than Queen Margherita, after which the famous pizza margherita itself is named!
“The story goes that, in 1889, 28 years after the unification of Italy, during a visit to Naples by Queen Margherita, chef Raffaele Esposito created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil) to present to her. The Queen loved the pizza so much that the chef named it in her honour and the rest is history!
“Now, 124 years later, Queen Margherita’s great great grandson, Emanuele Filiberto, has commissioned me to create a unique pizza portrait of himself – that really is a pizza art history!”
Inspired by Andy Warhol’s monochrome printing technique, Domenico Crolla’s utterly unique pizza art creations has seen him depict a series of celebrity portraits on pizza toppings – including The Pope, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and singer Rihanna.
Demand for his pizza art has been such that plans are now in place for his pizza portraits to be depicted across a range of products, from t-shirts and aprons to mugs and mouse mats.
