CONSTRUCTION is progressing well on the first phase of the development of six new workshops at Morefield Industrial Estate, Ullapool.
The Morefield site was purchased by the Ullapool Harbour Trust in 2009 and the mixed development of commercial and industrial units and storage facilities is due to be completed in July this year.
All six units have now been constructed and will be wind and water-tight shortly.
The units are being built by local firm, Ullapool Construction, who won the tender to develop the two-acre site on the outskirts of Ullapool.
Once completed, the development will include a range of business premises including workshops, storage areas and an access road and car park.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is supporting Ullapool Harbour Trust with a £220,000 grant towards the £1.3m development.
Lindsay Simpson, from HIE, said: “Due to local demand for workshop units in the Ullapool area, the trust is developing this ambitious project which will directly benefit the local area.
“The units will create opportunities for businesses looking to expand and businesses could be encouraged to locate to Ullapool, bringing economic benefits and jobs to the fragile area.”
Kevin Peach, harbourmaster at Ullapool, said: “The work is progressing well and we are happy with it.
“We already have a list of prospective tenants as demand for high quality units in Ullapool is strong.
“Having spent nearly four years working on this development, we are delighted that work is now underway.
“We appreciate the financial assistance from HIE, who continue to be extremely supportive of the harbour’s efforts and we look forward to the completion of the development.”
Ullapool Construction said that this is a significant project for them and they are delighted to have won the contract.
