THE Doric Scotch Whisky Club launches today (04.03.13) to offer whisky lovers the world over a companion on the road to discovering great whiskies from all the distilleries in Scotland.
With whisky’s finest guru (and guest star in Ken Loach’s BAFTA award-winning The Angel’s Share) Charles MacLean providing tasting notes, The Doric Scotch Whisky Club has been established on the back of the recent surge in global interest in whisky to recommend a range of whiskies, from blends to single casks, for consumption and investment to an international membership.
MacLean said: “The Doric is about journeys of exploration. Real, physical journeys to distilleries; armchair journeys guided by books; journeys of sensory exploration into the flavour of Scotch whisky – and what a variety of flavours there are to be discovered!
“The journey of discovery is perpetual. It has no destination, and many destinations, many discoveries – some of them unexpected.”
Joining MacLean as a regular contributor to the Club is John Rose, former Under the Hammer columnist in the Whisky magazine, who brings over three decades of experience of collecting and investing in Scotch whisky.
Meanwhile, The Doric (the Club’s fictional character) will invite people from all walks of life to do tastings for the Club and whisky lovers across the globe will be the Doric’s companion on each and every distillery trip.
The Doric has also started buying individual bottles and collections of whisky to sell on to other members and there has already been a brisk trade between club members.
Inspired by Alfred Barnard who, 127 years ago, started his epic journey around the distilleries in Scotland to explain to readers of Harper’s Wine and Spirits Gazette why the whisky tasted so good, Club members are invited to continue that journey to discover the best whisky available in single casks, single malts, limited editions and great blends.
Doric founder, Ann Medlock, said: “We believe that there are whiskies for everyone and our aim is to find which are for you. Through a weekly report from a distillery, which will include travel notes and historical references back to Barnard’s original text, members will be taken on a whisky journey.
“Discover where whiskies are made and the people who make them through this new members club, suitable for connoisseurs and enthusiastic amateurs alike.”
Reports include details of the core expressions from each distillery which, in turn, are supported by detailed tasting notes from Charles MacLean’s ‘Whiskypedia – A Gazetteer of Scotch Whisky’.
“Despite shipping whisky abroad becoming more problematic as any alcohol over 24% ABV was classified as a dangerous good last December, thereby increasing the price of international shipping and reducing the number of carriers, we have established strategic relationships with international shippers and distributors to ensure the Club has a worldwide reach,” said Medlock.
Membership of the club includes a complimentary bottle of single cask, single malt Scotch whisky exclusive to the Doric Scotch Whisky Club in cask strength, together with regular offerings of rare and limited release distillery editions.
The club is also planning bespoke tastings and tours of distilleries where members will gain insight and access to the industry not generally available.
