A LANDMARK Aberdeen hotel is gearing up to throw open its doors for a special exhibition to mark its 120th anniversary.
The Caledonian by Thistle – affectionately known by many as ‘The Caley’ – is inviting members of the public to join in with the celebrations which take the form of a public exhibition which will run in the hotel between 11am and 4pm on January 26th and 27th.
The iconic building on Aberdeen’s Union Terrace has long been a favourite with stars of the stage and screen and even royalty, and staff have been busy pulling together photos, memorabilia and memories for the exhibition.
Among the many items on display will be a vesta case for holding matches which bears the original Grand Hotel name, a letter on headed paper dating back to 1899, a hotel brochure which has been dated to pre-1920 when the hotel changed its name and a 1970s Coca Cola can.
The large copper kettle which once formed the centrepiece of the cocktail bar will also be on view, as will mouldings from the Schaarhörn – a ship rumoured to have carried German Emperor William II – which used to be displayed in The Terrace suite.
Organisers are also hoping that local people will add their items and memories to ensure that the 120th anniversary is an occasion to remember.
