ON January 3, residents of the USA celebrated National Sleep Day, an initiative applauded by the UK’s Duvet and Pillow Warehouse (DAPW), an online retailer specialising in soft furnishings for the home.
Says a spokesperson: “The day is marked to encourage people to have a good night’s sleep and work on combating sleep disorders, from temporary jet lag to sleepwalking and sleep apnea.
“Short and long term sleep deprivation can result in a weakened immune system, loss of concentration, lethargy, clumsiness and weight fluctuations. In turn, this can affect people’s work and social lives.
“Alarmingly, research carried out by US company, Anna’s Linens, revealed that nearly two-thirds or 65 per cent of its 3,700 respondents enjoyed ‘a restful night’s sleep’ only three nights or less per week.”
In light of these results, Jonathan Attwood for DAPW said: “Sometimes, we all need to be reminded of the importance of a good night’s sleep and how a lack thereof can leave its mark on our health and wellbeing. That’s why we at DAPW support initiatives like the National Sleep Day.”
Not much is known about the origins of this unusual holiday, but DAPW speculate that the day was chosen since an even higher number of people suffer from a lack of sleep after the busy festive period around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
“We recommend making it your new year’s resolution to improve your sleeping pattern and environment,” Attwood continued.
“Aim to develop a regular sleeping pattern by going to bed at a similar time every day and cutting down on late night snacks and caffeine-fuelled beverages.”
“Avoid keeping televisions and computers in the bedroom, air your bedroom regularly and think about updating your bedding. If you don’t have a lot to spend, even small items like a memory foam pillow can make a big difference in the long run, contributing to a more comfortable sleeping area.”
To further encourage a healthy and happy nation, in March, the USA will observe National Sleep Awareness Week which will see campaigners across the country educating their peers on how to get a good night’s sleep.
DAPW expresses its hope that the UK will soon follow suit with a national day or week of its own. To encourage healthy sleep, the company offers a range of soft furnishings for the bedroom, including mattress toppers, duvets and bed linen.
