APSCo, who are the UK’s leading professional recruitment industry body, found that during October 2012, firms hired less permanent workers whilst the number of freelancers being hired increased. The monthly report is focussed on covering monthly jobs data.
The jobs data research concluded the number of permanent jobs in the professional recruitment market has continued to fall, with a two per cent drop in the number of available jobs over the last year, ending in October 2012.
The unexpected anomaly was down to professional businesses increasing their reliance on temporary staff by four per cent, through additional placements over the same period. As businesses are using temporary staff to help meet demand levels .
The trend of hiring temporary staff over permanent during the current economic conditions, is no doubt benefiting contractors and freelancers operating within the UK.
A spokesperson from UK umbrella company, Tarpon, says: “This will no doubt give a boost of confidence to all the current temporary workers in the UK today. Permanent jobs are often viewed as a reliable and available means of employment. This news will help confirm the legitimacy of contracting and freelancing in the UK.

The research provides a great overview of the UK’s professional recruitment market, covering all professional-level sectors. The temporary placements that have seen the most significant growth in the last year have been the marketing and media sector. Which in the last year saw a rise of seven per cent.
Ann Swain, chief executive for APSCo, is quoted on the APSCo website, as saying: “We’re seeing a very continuous trend in the professional recruitment market towards the hiring of temporary staff in preference to permanent staff.”
She goes on to be quoted, as saying: “Whilst an increase in temporary placements may not appear good news as permanent hires fall, the use of contract workers is offering a great deal of flexibility to both employers and employees.”
