THE success of a community archaeology project funded by Irvine Bay Regeneration Company and the Heritage Lottery Fund has won national acclaim.
Jim Kennedy of Kilwinning Heritage spoke at Scotland’s Community Heritage Conference at Birnam, organised by the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments Scotland.
The event featured Community projects which have taken place throughout the country.
The Kilwinning Community Archaeology Project has seen excavations in at Kilwinning Abbey over the last two summers.
Kilwinning Heritage chair, Andy Baird, and secretary, Christine Watson, represented the Society at a stand at the conference to highlight the work undertaken by 200 volunteers during the Kilwinning Community Archaeology Project 2010-2012, which attracted a great deal of interest from the 140 delegates.
In his presentation to conference, Jim Kennedy described the different aspects of the highly successful project, not just the archaeology, and emphasised the lasting and positive legacy it has left.
As an integral part of the on-going town centre regeneration, the project has helped to increase the number of visitors to the town, and consequently has aided in revitalising the town centre.
