A LEADING North-east recycling firm has expanded its specialist food waste collection service to help businesses in the north of Scotland prepare for new recycling regulations.
Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which transforms food and garden waste into compost, has increased its business into Inverness and surrounding areas.
A dozen new jobs will be created as a satellite depot becomes operational and two new food waste collection lorries will be added to the fleet.
The company has also invested in food waste depackaging equipment to handle supermarket waste, after securing a contract with 23 Scotmid stores beginning early November.
The £500,000 investment allows Keenan Recycling, to collect food waste from businesses in and around the Inverness area in addition to the North-east.
The organics recycling firm currently processes in excess of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year at the award-winning £5million facility, collecting food waste from more than 500 businesses across the region.
Begins a spokesperson: “The firm launched the commercial food waste collection scheme in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in 2010, becoming the first company in the North-east offering organisations the opportunity to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels.
“The organics recycling company also deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from local authorities across Scotland.
“The move will help north businesses meet targets set out in The Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which requires all businesses producing more than 50kg of food waste per week to separate this from landfill waste by January 2014.
“By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.”
Finance director of Keenan Recycling, Gregor Keenan, said: “This expansion signifies a successful diversification for our company to venture into collecting waste further afield.
“We now have the facilities to operate collections in Aberdeen and Inverness, as well as the surrounding areas.
“The expansion will help secure businesses for the future in terms of the new legislation which will be in place by January 2014, and we hope it will help businesses make a few simple changes to ensure they are legally compliant and on track with their environmental targets.”
Keenan Recycling recently scooped the Overall Small Business award and Green Award at the prestigious Northern Star Awards in October, organised by the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce.
