LEADING casing accessory and completion tool company, Downhole Products, is tackling the skills gap head on by providing training for a new generation of oil industry workers.

The award-winning company is based in Portlethen and is a leader in the design, manufacture and supply of casing accessories and completion tools such as centralisers, reamer guide shoes and cable clamp protectors.

In addition to the Aberdeenshire headquarters, Downhole Products also operates bases the Middle East, Asia, USA and Australia.

The company recently marked a new era in its ongoing global expansion with the opening of a $6 million factory in China.

“We have a long history of encouraging people into the industry and nurturing young, fresh talent is crucial to the future success of our business,” commented Downhole Products’ George Richardson.

“Retaining people is a real and ongoing challenge but, in our experience, providing keen and eager people with a well structured education of a high standard can fuel their enthusiasm and commitment.

“As well as having tutors come in, some people go to college and we have found the combination of classroom and practical work to be a real recipe for success.”

Managing director, Ian Kirk, added: “We are finding as a company that there is a severe shortage of practical people out in the employment marketplace.

“Individuals might have the schooling qualifications but practical knowledge is sadly lacking these days and this is what we are usually looking for.

“Internal training is now a necessity and the only way we are going to be able to meet our future demands in the oil industry.”

Thanks to this proactive approach, Downhole Products is attracting candidates from a broad range of backgrounds, such as recent recruit Nathan Kirk from Methlick who has joined the Portlethen team as a trainee product development designer.

Nathan explained: “I am really enjoying the learning opportunities which exist within the company.

“There is lots of help and support and I think that is one of the great benefits of being part of a fairly small team because I am learning a lot very quickly.”
