Media Release: Seafood in Schools anchoring in Portree

SEAFOOD Scotland is continuing the highly-successful Seafood in Schools programme with an exciting, interactive event at Portree High School on the Isle of Skye, on the 13th and 14th November.

Around 250 pupils from the high school and local primary schools will be attending the event.

The children will enjoy workshops with their classmates, learning where seafood comes from, how healthy it is to eat, and how it gets from sea to plate.

A selection of fish and shellfish will be available to taste, including local langoustine supplied by the Scottish West Coast Langoustine Co-operative, and pupils will have the opportunity to see and handle live species including crab, lobster, haddock, monkfish and even squid.

On Tuesday 13th, there will also be an additional workshop about salmon farming on Skye.

Local chefs, Simon Wallwork of the Glenview Inn (Tuesday) and Michael Smith of the Three Chimneys (Wednesday), will be on hand to demonstrate how to prepare and cook quick, tasty, fish dishes for kids.

Michael Smith said: “At Three Chimneys, we are widely recognised for our use of exquisite local produce and we are delighted to be associated with the Seafood in Schools project using the best of local seafood.”

Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend a community event on the evening of the first day (13th November: 17.30-19.30), which will give them an opportunity to enjoy the same workshops and sample seafood delicacies.

In addition to classes from Portree High, pupils will attend from Portree, Broadford, Carbost, Struan, MacDiarmid, Knockbrek, Kyleakin, Elgol, Kilmuir, Staffin, Raasay, Dunvegan, and Edinbane primary schools.
