THE British Red Cross has launched an appeal to help the people devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
The deadly ‘superstorm’ has caused devastation in the Caribbean, and USA, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless, and killing at least 84.
In Cuba, 75,000 people have been left homeless, with 15,000 homes destroyed
In Jamaica, 17,000 people are affected and thousands homes have been damaged
In the Dominican Republic, 17,500 people are displaced and 3,500 homes flooded
In Haiti 17,000 people were evacuated, and thousands of homes destroyed
In the USA ,11,000 people were forced to flee and 7.5million were left without power
With hundreds of thousands of people still in urgent need of emergency support, the British Red Cross is appealing for funds to provide essentials such as food, water and shelter.
Money raised by the Hurricane Sandy Appeal will go to the areas with the greatest unmet need throughout the affected countries, where the Red Cross is working to save lives.
Mike Goodhand, head of International Logistics at the British Red Cross, said: “Hurricane Sandy has ripped through communities from Port-au-Prince to New York, leaving chaos and devastation in its wake.
“The British public can help the Red Cross’s lifesaving work by donating to the Hurricane Sandy Appeal, which will tackle the impact of Sandy in the areas of greatest need.”
Money raised by the British Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Appeal will go to meet the greatest unmet need caused by the hurricane. To donate go to www.redcross.org.uk/hurricanesandy
