Media Release: Matilda Brown – Music & Mountains

Knoydart, Scottish Highlands, UK

MOVING on from her successful performance at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, Matilda Brown will be performing her uniquely evocative and atmospheric compositions at this year’s ‘sound – North East Scotland’s Festival of New Music’, in the Victoria & Albert Halls, Ballater, this Sunday the 28th of October.

Matilda (piano, voice, acoustic guitar and samples) will be performing along with her ensemble, who are Graeme Stephen (jazz guitar), Chris Wallace (drums), Jo Nicholson (clarinet and bass clarinet) and Rosenna East (violin) – all established and acclaimed Scottish musicians.

The performance will be accompanied by the photography of her walking companion, Nick Rawle.

A marriage of music and imagery is the creative result of long and tiring days tramping across the canvas of the mountainous landscape, which is the enveloping inspiration for Matilda, and this is her musical response to those journeys.

This performance is the final element in a busy weekend for Matilda, as she explains: “I’m very excited about this weekend; it’s full of challenges for me musically and as an avid walker of the mountains.

“On Friday, people can sign up to go for a mountain walk with me, where we’ll visit a bothy and take in the landscape. On Saturday, we will all come together again in Ballater, and make music inspired by our experiences of the journey. These new compositions we’ll perform in the Sunday concert.

“Also, over the three days, there are concurrent exhibitions, in St. Margarets Church, Braemar, the Victoria & Albert Halls, Ballater, and in the library of Aberdeen University.

“The exhibition will present original photographs by Nick, as well as projected images, and music and songs which reflect our physical and emotional responses to the landscape in our journeys, staying in bothies and camping across the Highlands of Scotland.

“And then, we finally have our ensemble performance on Sunday, which I’m looking forward to greatly. It’s such a treat and pleasure to play with four diverse but very talented musicians, and express through my music, my mountain experiences.”

Matilda and her Ensemble can be seen and heard at the Victoria & Albert Halls, Station Square, Ballater, 4pm this Sunday the 28th of October.
