Photography competition for school pupils aims to raise awareness of the power of Scotland’s waters
THE Scottish Government’s Saltire Prize has teamed up with regional newspapers across Scotland for a campaign aimed at school pupils highlighting the awesome force and natural resource of the country’s waters.
Entries from around Scotland have been flooding in since the competition was announced in the following local newspapers: Aberdeen’s Evening Express, Dundee’s Evening Telegraph, the Edinburgh Evening News, the Evening Times in Glasgow and the Inverness Courier.
The Scottish Government is working with the media partner in each region to help drive entries and publicise the winning photographs from the regional and national heats of the competition.
Each newspaper will lead the regional judging panel for the competition with the regional winners of three categories, Primary, S1-S3, and S4-S6, each set to receive photography equipment for their school.
All regional winners will be automatically entered into the National round which will be judged by a panel including the internationally renowned Scottish photographer, David Eustace.
The junior photography competition invites school pupils to capture ‘the Power of the Sea’ through images to encourage youngsters to think about the natural environment around them and its potential to revolutionise the world’s energy needs.
The competition asks entrants to creatively photograph the power of water in their local area which can be anything from the gushing waterfalls and flowing rivers to splashing waves and pounding seas.
Clare Smith, head of PR at the Scottish Government, said: “We’re working with these titles as media partners for the key role they play in engaging their readers in the competition and vitally for the part the editors will play as judges for the best entries at the regional heat.
“We hope that the Saltire Prize junior photography competition will inspire young people to understand and respect the power of the sea, and to appreciate the benefits that Scotland’s seas offer to so many of our communities.”
Judge, David Eustace, said: “Competitions such as Power of the Sea inspire the next generation to get creative.
“Photography continues to evolve and it has never been more accessible. Whether you want to use the best equipment or if you simply want to document daily life with the use of a mobile phone camera, photography is a skill that everyone can have a stab at to produce something beautiful.
“I’m really excited to see the photographs pupils acrossScotlandproduce and the different way they’ll capture the Power of the Sea. Scotland’s fantastic natural environment is both a canvas and a stimulant that has inspired many beautiful photographs and I look forward to judging the entries.”
Regional winners will be announced on the 20 November 2012 and National winners will be announced on 30 November 2012.

Background to the Power of the Sea Competition

The Power of the Sea is a photography competition sponsored by the Saltire Prize. Designed to engage young people across Scotland, educating them about the power of water in Scotland to build awareness of the marine renewable sector and the Saltire Prize.
The Junior Saltire Prize was launched in 2011 and is specifically aimed to inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs in Scotland’s schools.
The competition asks entrants to creatively photograph the power of water in their local area – this can be anything from the gushing waterfalls and flowing rivers to splashing waves and pounding seas.
There are no creative limits, other than the main focus of the image must be water and the image must be taken in Scotland.

Primary pupils P1-7
S1-3
S4-6
Pupils can chose to enter individually, as a group, class or school.
Judging process
Entries will be judged at a regional level and national level. There are seven regions in total:
Aberdeen and North-East
Edinburgh and Lothians
Glasgow and Strathclyde
Highlands and Islands
South
Tayside
Central and Fife
One finalist from each region age group will progress to the national final and an overall winner will be chosen in each age group.
Prizes available to be won:
One finalist in each age group in each of the 7 regions will receive the following prize:
- £50 digital camera for the winning entry
- £300 of photography equipment for their school
One overall national winner in each age group will receive the following:
- £750 of photography equipment for their school
- A photography masterclass for their school with a professional photographer
- A £150 camera for the winner
About the Junior Saltire Prize
The Junior Saltire Prize was created in 2011 to raise awareness amongst young people of the exciting developments within the marine renewable sector inScotland. Schools were asked to create a blueprint, design and build a model to demonstrate their ideas of a wave energy device in Scottish waters.
The competition is open to all primary five to seven pupils, first to third year and fourth to sixth year pupils in Scotland. The 11 finalists were able to test the electrical output of their models in the test tank at the Dept of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of Strathclyde University.
