Rochefort – in Charente-Maritime, south of La Rochelle, the Atlantic coast beckons with the cradle of the French navy in Rochefort. Not only does the town have a rich maritime heritage, but it also has a reconstruction of La Fayette’s 18th century ship l’Hermione, a Royal Rope factory which originally housed Louis XIV’s naval arsenal and Pierre Loti’s exotic relics.
