Media Release: Hearts Women set sights on promotion following title win

HEARTS Women are turning their sights towards winning promotion to the second-top tier of Scottish women’s football, after winning their regional divisional title.

A 10-1 win over Football Club of Edinburgh at the weekend secured the Second Division (South East) title, ahead of nearest challengers, Spartans Reserves, against whom they secured a vital 0-0 draw three weeks ago that all but wrapped up the division.

The divisional title adds to the Second Division League Cup won earlier this year.

But to secure a place in the Scotland-wide First Division, Hearts Women have to now negotiate play-offs, scheduled provisionally for a week on Sunday.

Four divisional winners – from the South East, East, North and West – now compete for three places.

Hearts Women registered an impressive 109 goals for and five against (two scored by Football Club of Edinburgh) during their league campaign, which has just ended on account of Scottish women’s football being played per calendar year.

The team plays its home ties in Tranent. The club – both women and girls – was founded three years ago.

The weekend was certainly one to treasure for Hearts, its under-13 side having, on the Saturday, negotiated its way to the final of their Scottish Cup competition. They, like their older counterparts, are also their divisional League Cup winners.

Says chair, Margaret Milne: “It’s been a fantastic season and I would look to extend my congratulations to all the players and the coaching staff. We can’t wait for the women taking part in the play-offs; it’s a great challenge that I am sure the players will rise to, as they have throughout their campaign.

“To have scored 109 goals and conceded only five in the league tells its own story. And it’s great to see our age-group sides also prosper this season. The under-13s I saw in their Scottish Cup semi-final, at Ravenscraig, and their football was a joy to behold.

“As well as the parents and coaching staff, I’d like to thank our sponsors. We are particularly grateful to our main sponsor, Independent Plant Services Ltd, with additional sponsorship from Charlie Irons Coaches; also Kevin Mauriello at Baberton Building Services, along with MSL (Scotland) Ltd, MKM Building Supplies, and ASC Ltd.

“Our season is far from over, but we are already thinking ahead, irrespective of how our remaining ties unfold, as the club continues to grow and develop.”
