STAYING in an independent hostel is fast becoming a more likely choice for people looking for quality accommodation in Scotland, and the Scottish hostel sector is responding by putting innovation and Scottish hospitality at the heart of their customer service.
Clear evidence of this is the success of Morag’s Lodge in Fort Augustus which has just won ‘Best Self-Service Accommodation 2012’ at the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards.
The judges said: “Morag’s Lodge demonstrates a powerful focus on customer service via a clear and impressive interpretation of ‘Highland hospitality’.
“They possess a driving ambition to be the budget accommodation unit of choice in the Highlands.”
Morag’s Lodge is a member of the Scottish Independent Hostel (SIH) network which has 130 individual and unique privately-run hostels within its membership.
Andrew Donaldson, chair of SIH, said: “Our hostel members tend to locate in the most magical places and offer a depth of local knowledge for their guests because they are passionate about their area of Scotland and hostelling.
“Many hostels offer unique extras and many are responding to customers by providing private rooms and ensuite bathrooms, while still allowing the warmth of shared experience for which hostelling is famous.
