ONE of the world’s largest independent suppliers in the global oil and gas drill bit market has underlined its long-standing commitment to rugby in the North-east of Scotland thanks to a new sponsorship deal with a leading local club.
Varel International is headquartered in Texas and operates from locations around the world, including Portlethen near Aberdeen.
The company has long been a supporter of rugby in the Aberdeen area and recently signed a deal to support Aberdeenshire RFC 1st XV and the women’s team, Aberdeenshire Quines, during the coming season.
Varel International North Sea manager, Jason Marchant, said: “We are delighted to continue the company’s long association with local amateur rugby by offering financial assistance so that the club can continue its great work.
“We feel that this particular club offers a good alternative for young sportspeople in a catchment area generally dominated by football and the Aberdeenshire Quines are the only North East club to offer women’s rugby at competitive league level.”
Aberdeenshire RFC are current Caledonia League Division One champions 2011/2012 and president, Martin Doig, continued: “Aberdeenshire RFC is a very ambitious club with serious intentions of improving playing standards across all rugby teams it fields in male and female competitions.
“This requires hard work and dedication from many, both on and off the field. It also requires enabling support from our sponsors.
“Over the last few seasons Varel have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the whole club and their continued support is both invaluable and much appreciated.”
Aberdeenshire Quines president, Sarah Butcher, added: “The sponsorship from Varel is very important to the Aberdeenshire Quines as, not only has it meant we can get our new strip, but it will also facilitate all aspects of the team from transport costs to ground fees.
“With the Olympics this summer, women in sport and their achievements have been in the spotlight and it is really great to see a company like Varel get behind the only competitive women’s rugby team in the North East.
“This sponsorship will ensure the Quines can continue to compete country-wide for another season.”
