AN unique, art-quality book featuring a life’s work of photographs has been published by Lomond Books in September 2012.
Decisive moments in the social transformation of a nation are captured in these striking black and white and colour photographs, testament to the skill and imagination of photographer Douglas Corrance as he recorded people, places and events over time.
Entitled Scotland: Five Decades, the book includes over 350 images that create a photographic journey through time and across Scotland, bringing landscapes, people and history to life and allowing the reader to experience the visual character of the nation.
From his first job as an indentured photographer for the Highland News aged just 15, to his body of work shot as Official Photographer for the then Scottish Tourist Board (now VisitScotland), to his freelance images that have appeared in every major Scottish newspaper, Douglas’s passion for photography is evident in his unique and honest work.
Whether it’s a Border shepherd leading his flock, the attendant at Glasgow’s last steamie, sunsets on the West Coast, the intensity of competition at Highland Games, the mystery of Loch Ness, the passion of the politician or the innocence of children at play, the vivid and varied tapestry that makes up Scottish life is to be found here.

Including portraits of famous and influential faces such as Richard Demarco, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Page, Richard Holloway, James Kelman and Ian Rankin, Douglas’s work tells a cultural history of Scotland, while his images of the ordinary people of the nation – engine enthusiasts at Bo’ness, sheep shearers in Glencoe, fish smokers on the East Coast, school children, families and locals – provide a social history of the past 50 years.

The introductory chapter and picture captions, written by Douglas, provide a wealth of fascinating information and facts probably unknown to many. It is more than just a collection of images though, as the work is punctuated throughout by Douglas’s personal view of life as well as his often humorous anecdotes, making this book as much a joy to read as it is to view.
