Media Release: French Duncan launches Explorer’s Club, offering tax advice to fellow accountants

Craig Mathieson

LEADING mid-tier accountancy firm, French Duncan, is to launch an Explorer’s Club offering specialist tax advice to smaller accountancy firms lacking certain aspects of tax expertise in-house.

French Duncan VAT partner Craig Mathieson said: “They say that a problem shared is a problem halved and the thinking behind the foundation of our new Explorer’s Club is to provide smaller accountancy firms with a facility to enable them to offer a more comprehensive and specialist tax service to their clients.

“Having been regularly asked by fellow accountancy firms for specialist tax advice to help them provide the best guidance for their clients, we’ve launched this forum for accountants to come and discuss the latest topics and areas of interest in the tax world, together with the opportunity to have a chat with our specialists on any area of tax which may be causing concern.

“Some smaller accountancy practices are, for example, not always comfortable offering advice to clients on such specialist areas as an investigation by HMRC into suspected tax fraud and it can be useful for them to be able to recommend an accountant with detailed knowledge and experience in such areas: the Explorer’s Club will enable them to do just that.”

Mathieson stressed that the aim of the Explorer’s Club was to develop relationships with smaller accountancy practices with a view to offering them access to a range of tax-related expertise that they might not have at their disposal in-house rather than an attempt to pinch clients from these smaller practices.

“The point is to provide a range of specialist information to fellow accountants that they can then supply to their clients,” he said.

“Indeed, we don’t even need to know the identity of the client. And to offer reassurance, the Explorer’s Club will work on the understanding that we will undertake not to approach members’ clients with a view to working for them directly.”

The first Explorer’s Club (which takes its name from the polar expeditions which earned Mathieson the title of ‘Scotland’s Greatest Living Explorer’) takes place at French Duncan’s Glasgow city centre premises at 5.30pm on Thursday 27 September.

In addition to Mathieson, French Duncan tax partner Ann Somerville and tax director Andrew Ford will be on hand to discuss the latest trends and issues in VAT and Direct Taxes.
