NORTH East based QHSE consultancy, QuEnSH Specialists Ltd, have proved that you don’t need to be a large employer to help students with work experience placements.
SME QuEnSH is delighted to have been able to offer a summer placement to local student Grant Fisken.
Just about to start his final year at Robert Gordon University studying journalism, we caught up with Grant to find out about his placement at QuEnSH and his plans for the future…
How did you get your placement at QuEnSH? I worked for them briefly last summer just doing data entry and other really basic work. They remembered me and so offered me a full summer placement plus part time work during term time.
What sort of work are you doing? I’ve been very involved with helping to set up their new website, working with the designers and coming up with ideas for the overall design. I’ve also organised their first golf day and have set up their social media. I do pretty much anything else on a need to do basis.
What are QuEnSH like to work for? They are a very friendly and approachable group of people. They actively encourage me to come up with my own ideas which is a refreshing change. They were also very generous in giving me the flexibility to have the time off to be a press volunteer at the 2012 Olympics – what a brilliant experience.
What are the best bits working there? Being involved with new initiatives and seeing them through from the start to the finish. Things like the website when it started on a few pieces of paper and now is almost ready to be launched. It’s the creative freedom that is really appealing.
And the worst bits? Things take time to happen when I want them done straight away. It’s only a small company so everyone gets caught up with doing other things and so I have to wait to get things approved.
What are the benefits of working at QuEnSH? We do a lot of practical stuff at university, but it is only short-term and does not have a lasting effect. I’ve been able to put what I’ve learnt at uni into practice and deal with real situations where the long-term implications have to be considered.
And finally, what are your plans for the future? I would like to get a job in sports journalism, somewhere far away and sunny. But I’m always open to options.
