COMMUNITY groups and charities across Scotland – where BT employees volunteer their time and skills – are being awarded grants totalling thousands of pounds.
BT is making the grants through its employee recognition scheme, the 2012 BT People Awards. The awards recognise BT’s volunteering heroes who give large amounts of their time to their local communities.
Twenty four groups in Scotland have received grants to continue their excellent work in the community, including: Barnardo’s in Dundee, Kilsyth Athletic Football Club in Glasgow, Cavalry Park Sports Club in Edinburgh and Inverness Skating and Ice Dance Club in Avoch. Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, said: “We were really impressed with the calibre of applications we received; the judges certainly had a hard time. The People Awards really highlight the fantastic work that BT people are doing in their communities and provide a great opportunity to reward their chosen community group or charity.”
Caroline Waters OBE, BT director of people and policy, said: “It’s great to see so many BT people using their professional skills to help others and bringing value to the community groups they work so closely with through our volunteering programme. Of course, it’s also a great development opportunity and BT benefits from the new skills, experiences and perspectives that our volunteers gain by being an active part of their local community.”
Two hundred and twenty-eight applications were received for the round of grants and 191 applicants received awards totalling £55,000. Each grant may be up to a maximum value of £1,000.
Applications were submitted by BT people from all over the world including Malaysia, the Republic of Ireland and the USA. These included a wide range of community organisations, from conservation groups to underwater hockey clubs, illustrating the wide variety of activities BT people are involved with.
