LUKE Hughes and Company has just been commissioned to create 24 warders’ chairs for the British Museum. Luke Hughes has worked with the British Museum on a number of previous projects over the past quarter of a century.
The fact that they keep on commissioning projects for Luke Hughes is a testament to the quality of the work.
The warders’ chairs are unique in that they have been designed to enhance the galleries whilst addressing a number of practical issues.
They are made from European oak to fit seamlessly in the iconic rooms of the museum. They include a lifting seat for the warders to place their jackets, water bottles and all the other clutter they carry with them.
Another feature of the warders’ chairs is that the foot rail has been inlaid with brass over the oak in order to protect the wood and increase the life of the chairs.
Margaret Hall, head of Design, commented in 2000, on previous work that Luke Hughes and Company had carried out for the British Museum:
“We would like to express our thanks to Luke Hughes and Company … for doing such an excellent job. The benches look splendid.”
Luke Hughes and Company’s fine pieces can be seen in public spaces all over the UK. They have worked in many notable buildings, such as the cathedrals of St Paul’s, Exeter and Winchester, Westminster Abbey and the UK Supreme High Court.
