THE Grand Mufti of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dr Mustafa ef. Ceric, who is the country’s senior Muslim leader, arrives in Scotland from Sarajevo on Wednesday 22 August, to discuss Islam in an European setting and the 20th anniversary of the bloody Bosnian conflict.
Dr Ceric has been an outspoken advocate of peace, justice and understanding between the peoples of his region.
He will speak about ‘Bosnia: Twenty Years On’ at 6pm on Friday 24 August at St John’s Church (Venue 127) as part of the Festival of Spirituality and Peace.
In addition to meeting civic and religious leaders in Scotland, he will also speak at the International Book Festival on ‘Re-thinking Islam’ and lead prayer and deliver khutban at Edinburgh Central Mosque.
Dr Mustafa ef. Ceric is being hosted by the Alwaleed Centre at the University of Edinburgh.
A Grand Mufti is the highest official of religious law in a Sunni or Ibadi Muslim national setting.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the worst conflict in Europe since the Second World War, which culminated in the notorious massacre of some 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995.
In a public meeting that forms part of the Festival of Spirituality and Peace, the Grand Mufti will discuss legacy of the conflict and how the faiths can contribute to peacebuilding with the Rev Donald Reeves, director of the Soul of Europe project, and Professor Hugh Goddard, director of the Prince Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World.
Dr Ceric is a member of several local and international scientific organisations and societies, including the Interreligious Council of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Foundation of Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial and Cemetery, the Council of 100 Leaders of the World Economic Forum, the World Conference of Religion and Peace, the Executive Committee of the European Council of Religious Leaders, the Board of Trustees of International Islamic University Islamabad, the Sharia’h Board of Bosnia Bank International, the Fiqh Academy in Mecca, Aal Albayt Foundation for Islamic Thought in Jordan, the World Council of Religions for Peace, the International Commission for Peace Research, UNESCO and the Executive Council of World Forum of Ulama.
The Festival of Spirituality and Peace, now in its 12th year in Edinburgh, features 400 cultural and discussion events across 21 venues.
Its theme this year is ‘Cooperation for Change’.
