WE have all been cheering on Sir Chris Hoy and the rest of Team GB in the cycling events and visitors to Glasgow Science Centre can go for gold this weekend as part of ‘Gravity Games’.
It’s all about going downhill fast, gravity defying stunts and fun science during the last weekend before the kids head back to school.
Visitors to the Glasgow attraction will be amazed at the jaw dropping displays from mountain bike stunt team Savage Skills, cycle around a virtual reality velodrome and win prizes, have a go at mountain biking on a purpose built forest track, take part in the Endura pedal power challenge and meet elite racing cyclist, Ian Wilkinson, plus hear from Gillian Cooke, Olympic Bobsleigh athlete about the science and technology behind training and racing in the Formula 1 of ice.
Dr Robin Hoyle, director of Science at Glasgow Science Centre and avid cyclist, said:
“Everyone is being inspired by the successes of Team GB at the Olympics and especially Sir Chris Hoy’s fifth gold medal win and Bradley Wiggins gold medal achievement following his Tour de France win.
“‘Gravity Games’ will give our visitors the chance to take part in different aspects of the sport, have a great time and learn some science at the same time.
“It is a brilliant way to spend the weekend before the kids head back to school.”
‘Gravity Games’ is the last in the series of special weekends as part of the summer programme ‘Energise’.
The programme has been a great success with visitors to the Centre and has appealed to all ages.
‘Energise’ focuses on sport and features a brand new set of interactive exhibits where visitors can compete with friends and family- race scalextrix cars using power generated by pedaling bikes, play our take on miniature golf but with a hockey stick, cut some moves on the dance floor, climb along the side of a building, try to drag a truck, have a go at ‘hang time’ or teeter along a balance beam all designed to test powers of balance, accuracy, reactions and agility.

“Energise has been a great success this summer and all the feedback we have received from our visitors has been extremely positive. There’s a great buzz with everyone taking part in the challenges and some friendly competition.
“‘Energise’ echoes our mission to show science in a fun and exciting way. Visitors are having a great time measuring the speed they can kick a football but they are also discovering how their calves, deltoids, glutes, hamstrings, core and quadricep muscles react when they kick it.”
Visitors to ‘Gravity Games’ can also get their ‘Game On’ in a live science show, visit the planetarium and relax in the celestial treasure trove, take part in a shadow puppet workshop, enjoy the roving Bright Night International entertainers and see The Dark Knight Rises in the IMAX.
‘Energise’ will close on the 19th of August so visitors don’t have long to visit, or revisit, this fantastic area within the Centre.
