NHS Lothian today announced that Mr Tim Davison has been appointed as its new chief executive.
Mr Davison, who had been acting as interim chief executive since May 2012 will now take up the substantive post at the head of one of Europe’s largest health systems.
Dr Charles Winstanley, chair of NHS Lothian Board, said: “I am delighted that Tim has accepted the appointment as chief executive of NHS Lothian.
“He has made an immediate and major impact in his short time here and has a firm grasp of the current issues affecting NHS Lothian.
“This is one of the biggest jobs in the NHS inScotlandand Tim has a lot of hard work ahead of him but I am confident that he is the right person to help take NHS Lothian forward.”
Mr Davison joined the NHS as a national management trainee in 1983.
Since then, he has worked in most sectors of the NHS inForthValley, Lothian, Greater Glasgow and Lanarkshire NHS Board areas.
He has been the chief executive of three NHS Trusts in Glasgow between 1994 and 2005, before being appointed to the post of chief executive, NHS Lanarkshire.
In all, he has been an NHS chief executive for more than 18 years.
He came to NHS Lothian in May 2012 on an interim basis following the retiral of Professor James Barbour.
Mr Davison said: “I am delighted to be taking up the post on a substantive basis.
“I have worked hard over the past three months to help set NHS Lothian on the road to recovery and I am delighted to be given the chance to see that through to a successful conclusion over the years ahead.
“NHS Lothian has many challenges to face over the next few years but I know we have an excellent workforce which is dedicated to delivering a top quality service.
“My priority will be to get our waiting times targets back on track and get our patients seen as quickly and effectively as possible. I am confident we can achieve that through hard work and everybody pulling together.
“The management styles and culture have been heavily criticised but there is ongoing work on those matters. Everybody I have met wants to rebuild the reputation of NHS Lothian and have it recognised throughout Scotland and beyond for delivering excellent standards of care for patients and as a good place to work.”
Eddie Egan, vice-chair of NHS Lothian and Employee director, said: “Tim has impressed me in the short time he has been here already.
“Morale has been very low across the board for some months now and I am sure that Tim will have a positive impact on that as we go forward.”
Mr Davison will take up his post as NHS Lothian’s chief executive with immediate effect.
