KEMNAY schoolchildren have had their creative efforts set in stone, thanks to Huntly-based Deveron Homes.
The company, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, has created 54 eco-homes in Kemnay and has commissioned Moray-based visual artist, Mary Bourne, to sculpt a piece of public art to form the centrepiece of the development.
During a local riverside walk, Mary enlisted the help of P5 pupils from Alehousewells School to research a range of indigenous trees which will be used to design planting around the artwork.
The children also drew pictures of native fish and on a recent visit to Fyfe Glenrock in Oldmeldrum saw them sandblasted onto Kemnay granite paving slabs.
Mary Bourne explained: “The artwork at Cairn View will comprise a paved Kemnay granite path in the form of the river Don as it winds around the village and the sandblasted paving slabs the children have designed will form part of that path.
“Cairn View is adjacent to Place of Origin, the large-scale public artwork which incorporates community woodland, stonework and a viewing cairn to allow views into Kemnay Quarry.
“It is a fascinating and unique public amenity and we hope that the domestic scale of the artwork in Cairn View will be complimentary to the elemental scale of Place of Origin.”
Deveron Homes’ sales director, Lynne Holburn, added: “The youngsters at Alehousewells have really been excited by our public art initiative. We are thrilled to see the first elements coming together and are looking forward to working with the children on the next part of the project.”
