THE Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns is helping Thornliebank Resource Centre service users get back on their feet by contributing to the cost of a much-needed manger cushion.
Run by East Renfrewshire Council, Thornliebank Resource Centre supports adults with a range of disabilities, including autism, which on occasion can lead some to drop unexpectedly to the ground in fear when confronted with unfamiliar surroundings.
A manger cushion is a device that can be slid under a recumbent adult then inflated to gently raise the individual to a sitting position, making it easier for support staff to get service users back on their feet.
Without a manger cushion it is problematic for some Thornliebank Resource Centre service users to visit local amenities, resulting in frustration and a lack fresh air and exercise.
The Avenue has donated £400 towards the £1,200 cost of a new cushion, alongside its nominated charity partner, ER Good Causes, and East Renfrewshire Council.
Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “The Avenue has a long and proud tradition of raising considerable funds for charitable causes thanks to the generosity of the people of East Renfrewshire.
“The Avenue prides itself in playing an active role in the local community and is committed fully to ongoing community engagement. As such, we are delighted to have this opportunity to help Thornliebank Resource Centre service users get back on their feet.”
East Renfrewshire Good Causes is a fundraising charity founded by Russell Macmillan, a local blind, double transplant recipient (pancreas and kidney) to say ‘thank you’ to society for his new life.
Mr Macmillan said: “In a perfect world, this manger cushion would be provided by the Local Authority, however, there is only so much money in the pot and disability equipment is very expensive. If we as a community wish to raise the standard locally, we all need to work together.
“The purchase of this cushion is an excellent example of an enlightened private business, a local charity and the local council pulling together, with the result being an improvement in the lives of local disabled adults. Well done to all for making this happen.”
