POLLY Murray, the first Scottish woman to summit Mount Everest, has said Scots must set their sights high if they are to break and retain the record for the ‘world’s largest kilt run’ on Saturday 2nd June.
The Perth Kilt Run, organised by Perth & Kinross Council as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, takes place in only three weeks but numbers still have a long way to climb, and the Everest adventurer is calling on fellow countrymen to come together to reach for the top.
“Never give up. It may look like Canada has the edge at the moment, but Scottish grit and determination could very easily see us steal the record and keep it on 2nd June. We just have to work together” she said.
And when it comes to finding the grit and determination to succeed, Polly is well placed to give advice.
Explains a spokesperson: “Reaching the top of Mount Everest at the age of just 26, making her the first woman to ever do so, this young adventurer has clocked up a series of inspirational ‘firsts’, including becoming the first person to Telemark ski off the side of Mt McKinley, North America’s highest mountain.
“There is no challenge too tough, no hill too high and although Polly’s current commitments mean she is unable to take part in the world record-attempt Kilt Run herself, she’s encouraging participants aged 12 and over to really get behind the event and to raise money for two worthwhile charities in the process.”
Polly continued: “It sounds like the whole Jubilee celebrations on the Saturday with pipers, live bands, the Kilt Run and a Big Lunch should be a fantastic day out for all the family.
“Having had both family and friends serving in the Armed Forces I know how important it is to support them when they need help.
“The work of PKAVS and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity makes a massive difference to the lives of many here in Scotland. So, I’m urging people to make the day count and raise money for these two worthwhile causes.”
The Perth Kilt Run is being held as part of the Perth & Kinross Council’s celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 2nd June.
Over 2,000 kilted runners aged 12 and over are needed to take to the streets of the City of Perth, running a minimum of 100 metres, to steal the record back from their twin town of Perth, Ontario in Canada.
