LAW At Work, one of Scotland’s leading employment law, HR, and health and safety specialists, was last night revealed to be the third best small workplace in Scotland, and the highest-ranked in its industry.

The fixed-fee, employment law and health and safety company, which has offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and London, fought off stiff competition from other Scottish firms to secure the position. This year, the competition was separated into small and medium/large workplaces to better allow companies to be evaluated against organisations who are similar to them in size.

Jane Wright, chief executive of Law At Work, was on hand to accept the award, which sees the business progress to the UK final. She said:

“To have moved up the rankings of this well-respected business award scheme speaks volumes about the different way in which Law At Work operates. We offer the same or better levels of service that clients expect from a leading law firm, but at a fixed and all-inclusive fee. We have recently expanded our health and safety division and we’re able to attract the very best staff because of our excellent reputation for management and leadership.

“Each member of our team is a highly valued individual, and it is through them that we build strong and lasting partnerships with our clients. Many of our clients have been with us since LAW started trading ten years ago and so have several of our staff. We believe in giving staff the best possible training and opportunities to shine; we actively reward them on their creativity and encourage team work, because this ensures that clients get the distilled expertise of the entire team. We aim to be the employer of choice in our fields, and as a result, we attract lawyers, HR and health and safety specialists who want to work and think differently.”

In announcing their decision, the judging panel, which included Skills Development Scotland and the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, commented:

“Law At Work actively reviews its rewards programme which includes ad hoc public thanks such as bottles of wine and vouchers and two annual away days that incorporate fun and recognition. Development is guided by employees’ individual personal motivators and demotivators, complemented by funding and time off for charity work.”

Next, the company will fight it out for the UK award at the end of May, before hopefully progressing to a European and possibly even a global final.

Tom O’Byrne, chief executive, Great Place to Work® Institute UK, added: “Law At Work are a great example of how a small organisation can leverage its strengths to provide a truly top-notch workplace. Emphasising its open, collegiate and co-operative work environment, staff at Law At Work are truly comfortable and engaged in their work, ultimately driving the organisation’s success. We couldn’t be happier with the way Law At Work makes workplace culture central to its business – it is without a doubt sowing the seeds of long-term success.”
