FAMILIES looking for more than chocolate eggs and bunnies at Easter should make their way to Lanarkshire where unusual animals are ruling the roost this weekend.
A Lanarkshire visitor attraction is looking forward to new inhabitants this year, following the surprise arrival of an incredibly large egg – just in time for Easter!
The early Easter egg was laid by a white rhea at Feufield Farm Trust in Symington, Biggar, and is remarkably bigger than the barn eggs which are typically laid on the farm.
Native to South America, a rhea is a relation of the ostrich and a seldom-seen sight in Scotland, but is only one of many unexpected animals which can be seen in Lanarkshire this Easter.
Commenting on the new arrival, Kim Adam, owner of Feufield Farm Trust, said: “Our white rhea, Heather, had been acting up a little of late and we were all very surprised when the egg appeared.
“And even more so when we noticed the size of it! We’re delighted to be expecting a new addition to our happy Feufield family that includes geese, goats, rabbits and chicks.
“Feufield Farm is also home to Chilean degus and llamas, which visitors are welcome to come and see any day of the week.”
Unusual animals are also a focus at ‘Animal Magic’ at Palacerigg Country Park in Cumbernauld on Easter Sunday and Monday.
Visitors can enjoy seeing the new born arrivals in the rare breeds collection and come face to face with more traditional farm animals.
From Eriskay ponies and North Ronaldsay and Boreray sheep to Shetland cattle and Scots Grey chicks, children can see the latest baby animals, go on pony rides, watch falconry displays and take part in arts and crafts activities.
Further animal antics can be found in Cumbernauld this Easter at birds of prey collection, World of Wings, Luggiebank.
Children can wander through the free range macaw exhibit, hunt for easter eggs, and have their faces painted as parents sit back and admire some of the largest birds from around the world.
Feufield Farm Trust, Palacerigg Country Park and World of Wings are part of a whole host of attractions that make animals more accessible to the public.
